2009-2010 Season

Eleven Seasons with Sparks

Gala Opening Concert

Richard Sparks, Conductor

Sunday, October 4, 2009

2:30pm McDougall United Church

Leonard Bernstein's dramatic and exciting Choruses from 'The Lark' (based on a play about Joan of Arc by Jean Anouilh) are featured on the first half of this program, along with the premiere of Trent Worthington's trio of choruses with Jeremy Spurgoean, piano.  In the second half of the program, Pro Coro is joined by the Pre-Tenors.  Opera choruses, the Pre-Tenors' patented hijinks, great singing, and some special surpirses make for a great opening concert.

The Heart of Kyiv

Mark Bailey, Guest Conductor

Sunday, February 7, 2010

2:30pm McDougall United Church

Ukraine and its capital Kyiv were either the point of origin or the gateway leading to a golden age of choral music for the Orthodox Church in Eastern Europe.  Mark Bailey is an expert on Slavic choral music.  He grew up in the Ukrainian church, conducts the Yale Russian Chorus (since 1995) and teaches musical liturgy at St. Vladimir's Orthodox Seminary.  He brings to Pro Coro a program of Ukrainian sacred masterpieces from chant through to the great works of Bortniansky: Stunningly beautiful a cappella music.

Good Friday at the Winspear

Richard Sparks, Conductor

Friday, April 2, 2010

7:30pm Winspear Centre

You may not have known it, but Johannes Brahms himself made an adaptation of his German Requiem for piano four hands.  In it, he takes his monumental work and casts it in a more intimate way, making it a transparent chamber work.  Pro Coro's fabulous voices will allow you to hear this work in a new way, and its message of hope ("Blessed are they who mourn") makes it Perfect for Good Friday.
