The Choir at the Winspear

Anders Eby, conductorAnders Eby

The Swedish conductor Anders Eby studied at the Royal University College of Music in Stockholm during the years 1972-1977, and finished his exam as a church musician, with choral conducting under Eric Ericson in 1977. Thereafter, he continued studies in conducting, mostly orchestral, in Italy, France, and the USA.

Since 1972 he has been a church musician with responsibility for the choirs in St Johannes church in the centre of Stockholm. Earlier, he founded the Mikaeli Chamber Choir, the ensemble which through the years has been his "own" instrument. Together with Mikaeli Chamber Choir, Anders Eby has made numerous tours all over the world, and recordings for radio, television and record. A characteristic of the Mikaeli Chamber Choir is its musical broadness - music in all styles and genres: a cappella, works with orchestra, musical drama and more. Mostly, though, their repertoire has been pointed to the large contemporary a cappella works.

Anders Eby has through the years been regularly sought after as a teacher of choral conducting at different colleges of music, and at special courses on all levels in Sweden as well as abroad – serving also as a juror at international festivals and competitions. Anders Eby was the Artistic Director for the Johannes Youth Choir (1977-1987), The Academic Chamber Choir of Uppsala (1974-1983) and Pro Coro Canada (1988-1992). In 1994 he was appointed the professor of choral conducting and choir singing at the Royal University College of Music (Kungliga Musikhögskolan) in Stockholm. Apart from the over-all responsibility for the institution for choir, his main task is with the post-graduate classes in conducting (a 3-year education program) and the choral conducting diploma class (2 years). In addition to that, he is the leader of the Chamber Choir of the Royal University College of Music (Kungliga Musikhögskolans Kammarkör).
